9 5/8 in. x 3 1/16 in. x 3 7/16 in. (24.5 cm x 7.7 cm x 8.8 cm)

Bryn Mawr College
Accession Number: 46.E1.3
Acquisition Date: 1946 or earlier
Geography: North and Central America, Greenland, West Greenland
Classification: Transportation and Distribution Artifacts; Land Transportation and Accessories
Culture/Nationality: Inuit, Greenlandic
Description: Merging traditional culture and modern commerce, the model sled represents important traditional means of transport, livelihood, and environment for native Arctic peoples, while their creation and collection in the 1970s was influenced by the growing interest in Arctic artifacts. These artifacts stem from a long tradition of making highly faithful models which were used as toys to teach necessary skills and customary lifeways to children.

Frederica de Laguna, founder of the Bryn Mawr anthropology department and a noted Arctic anthropologist, donated these and over 400 other artifacts to the College’s ethnographic and anthropological teaching collection.

This model was featured in the 2010-2011 'Worlds to Discover: 125 Years of Collections at Bryn Mawr College' exhibition.

This object has the following keywords:
  • bone - The rigid, calcareous material that is white in color and forms the skeleton of vertebrates; primarily composed of calcium hydroxyapatite with smaller amounts of calcium carbonate, calcium fluoride, magnesium phosphate, and ossein, a high molecular weight protein. Bones have a concentric structure with central lymphatic canals surrounded by a spongy lamellar region protected by a dense outer cortex. Bone has been carved and used since ancient times for many purposes, including fish-hooks, spear heads, needles, handles, and art objects. Bones were also burnt to produce bone black and boiled to produce bone glue. Bone can be distinguished from ivory by being generally whiter, more porous, and less dense.
  • dogsleds - Runnered vehicles pulled by dogs, especially those used by various Arctic peoples. For similar runnered vehicles operated by hand or by gravity, use "sleds."
  • models - Refers to scaled or lifesize representations of objects, structures, beings, or other subjects, usually three-dimensional.
  • Native American - Typically reserved to refer narrowly to the cultures of the native peoples of the United States and Canada, excluding the Eskimos and Aleuts. For the indigenous peoples of Canada use the term "First Nations." For the broader concept of the cultures of any native peoples of Central America, South America, North America, or the West Indies who are considered to belong to the Mongoloid division of the human species, use "Amerindian (culture)."
  • skin - Integument of animals such as sheep, calves, or goats, separated from the body, with or without hair, whether green, dry, tanned, or dressed. For the integument of large animals use "hide." For tanned skin, use "leather." For dried and stretched skin, use "parchment" or "vellum."
  • whips - Instruments consisting of an often rigid handle and a flexible lash or lashes made of cord or leather, used for disciplinary action, torture, or weapons against animals or humans.
