Description: The Coast Salish peoples of northern Washington and British Columbia have a long tradition of basketry. This round lidded jar-shaped basket is embellished with imbricated "v" and star designs, typical of the types of geometric patterns common on Coast Salish baskets. Imbrication, a process in which dyed materials (often grasses or roots) are layered, folded and sewn into the design, was developed to a high degree by Coast Salish basket makers. This type of basket was often used for the collection and storage of berries.
