Bryn Mawr College
Accession Number: Deanery.971
W.171 (Wyndham No.)
Geography: Classification:
Furnishings and Furniture; Furniture
Collection: Deanery Collection

M. Carey Thomas and Mary Elizabeth Garrett purchased numerous small tables and tabourets from Lockwood de Forest as well as other furniture importers in New York City. These were frequently of Indian and Middle Eastern design, although Chinese- and Japanese-style tables were purchased as well.

This octagonal table is intricately carved with floral designs on its sides and legs, having a top of colored ceramic tiles. As it was used in Mary Garrett’s bedroom on the second floor of the Deanery, it might have been brought with other pieces of furniture from her home in Baltimore, Maryland.
