Bryn Mawr College, Wyndham Alumnae House, 1st Floor

M. Carey Thomas, the first Dean and second President of Bryn Mawr College, lived in the Deanery from 1885 to 1933. She was apparently quite fond of lions, which could be found throughout the house in various forms. This six-piece set of fireplace tools, which consists of a pair of andirons, a poker, a shovel, tongs, and a tool stand, was used in the Japanese-themed Blue Room. Each piece is topped with a rampant lion. The lions on the andirons have forked tails and rest upon an hourglass-shaped stand with clawed feet. The tools are topped with a regardant (reverse-looking) lion with protruding tongue.

  • Animalia - Kingdom containing multicellular organisms having cells bound by a plasma membrane and organized into tissue and specialized tissue systems that permit them to either move about in search of food or to draw food toward themselves. They possess a nervous system with sensory and motor nerves, enabling them to receive environmental stimuli and to respond with specialized movements.
