Description: This cylindrical box is made by adze hollowing out a section of cordia subcordata, which is called kanava by the locals. The wood is locally renowned for its hardness and indestructability by rot or insects. The lid is carefully fitted to the container so that a considerable amount of force is needed to open it. It is attached to the box with a locally made sennit cord. The boxes are called "tuluma" and are used for storing fishing gear. They are waterproof and usually contain hooks, lines, an extra lavalava, fishing goggles and a bundle of the coconut fiber used for making lines. Small specimens such as this one are made for sale as handicrafts. This is an inferior specimen which is true of many items made for sale as opposed to those made as gifts. This tuluma was made by Sesale Perez.
