This statue type is known as the Athena Lemnia, after ancient references to a statue of Athena dedicated in Athens that was made by Pheidias, the famous sculptor. No such complete statue exists, either in its original mid-5th century BCE form or as a later copy: with this cast, August Gerber followed the 19th-century reconstruction that the German art historian Adolf Furtwängler created from a Roman marble body in Dresden and a cast of a marble head located in Bologna (Bryn Mawr's cast is painted black to resemble bronze). Before Furtwängler, other heads were fitted to the Dresden bodies, and the security of this reconstruction cannot be known. Until 1996, the cast was located in Thomas Great Hall, and from the 1970s acquired votive offerings, but after it was kidnapped and accidentally broken by Haverford students, it was decided to repair it and move it into its current space. A papier-mâché replica now resides in Thomas.
