Description: Lockwood de Forest (1850-1932) was an American-born artist who is most well-known for his landscape painting and interior design, as well as for his partnership with Louis Comfort Tiffany and the Associated Artists in New York. As a young man he travelled frequently with his family, touring Europe, North Africa, and parts of the Middle East before the age of 25, but his greatest interest was in the decorative arts of Eastern India. De Forest spent many years in Ahmedabad overseeing a workshop where craftsmen produced carved furniture, tracery panels, jewelry, and textiles for export to New York City.

De Forest painted this sketch of the Grand Canyon on site while visiting the area on one of three trips to the American Southwest. His oil sketch size was almost always 9? x 14 in., as he believed this size permitted the accurate perception of the picture plane at arm’s length.

Despite the fact that he is most well-known for other aspects of his work, de Forest considered himself primarily a painter. He preferred coastal or desert scenery and often chose to sketch at sunrise, sunset, or in moonlight. As is evident in this landscape, he tended to select views with low horizons, filling the frame with the sky.

De Forest continued to paint landscapes throughout his life, depicting scenes from his travels in India, Egypt, Syria, Alaska, Mexico and the American Southwest. Like the landscapes of his mentor Frederic Church, these paintings glow with atmospheric effects, even at the comparatively reduced scale of these intimate plein-air sketches. De Forest was an active exhibitor at the National Academy of Design, also designing frames for the paintings of his contemporaries.
