This jar, most likely a piece of kitchenware, is covered with an impressed design. Potters created the pattern by pressing woven mats, probably reed or hemp, into the walls of the unfired piece. For coil-constructed pieces, such as this one, this process was not only decorative, but it also helped to unify the coils and strengthen the walls of the vessel.

Firing ceramics at higher temperatures, which was achieved by the construction of hillside tunnel kilns, allowed for stronger and more durable wares. The technique was developed by the Chinese, gained popularity in Korea, and eventually spread to Japan.
