  • Byzantine - Culture, style, and period of the Christian states of the eastern Mediterranean during the rule of the Byzantine Empire (330 - 1453 CE). Byzantine art and culture was carried throughout much of the Christian world, and lasted into the 16th century in eastern Europe. The style is characterized by imperial and religious subject matter, and a movement away from the original Greek naturalistic forms to favor ritualistic stylization, intended to suggest the spiritual. For the culture and style of the Italian and western Mediterranean Christian world roughly from the third to the mid-ninth century CE, use "Early Christian."
  • clavi - Purple bands which ornamented Roman tunics, running up and over each shoulder from hem to hem, and indicated the rank of the wearer. Also, bands of this type and color used on vestments.
  • radiocarbon dating - Method of dating, based on the known half-life of carbon-14, by measuring the amount of low-level radioactivity of carbon remaining in ancient and dead material of organic origin and thus determining when a plant or animal had died.
  • tunics - Simple slip-on garments made with or without sleeves and usually knee-length or longer and belted at the waist; especially those worn by men and women of ancient Greece and Rome. Also, garments extending from the neckline to the waist or longer, usually high-necked and worn over other garments.
