Description: In Mother, Sloan’s familiarity with the subject lets him create a lovingly detailed portrait of his own mother. There is a warm contrast between light and dark; the artist’s brightly illuminated mother practically glows against the rich, black background. The shadows and the woman’s direct stare make the print’s setting a cozy space for two.
