John Sloan
American (1871 - 1951) Primary

The Little Bride

1906
Etching

Plate
5 in. x 6 7/8 in. (12.7 cm x 17.46 cm)

Bryn Mawr College
Accession Number: 1962.149.b
Geography: North and Central America, United States
Classification: Fine and Visual Arts; Prints; Etchings
Culture/Nationality: American
Collection: Harrington-Bishop Collection
Description: In this print, the strewn rice and objects seem to point toward the uninvited guests at the margin. Even in this celebratory scene, using dark and light contrast Sloan highlights the class disparity between the central and surrounding figures. At the top of the stairs, the hand of one guest cover the eyes of the clergyman who has just married the couple, showing us that he too is blinded to the contrast between these simultaneous realities.

Keywords Click a term to view the records with the same keyword
This object has the following keywords:
  • churches - Buildings for public Christian worship that are distinguished historically from chapels and oratories, which are buildings that are in some respect private, or not public in the widest sense. Church architecture generally somewhat follows standard models, which vary depending upon the date, location, and characteristics of the congregation.
  • etchings - Prints made from an etched printing plate, which is a metal plate on which a design is made by coating the plate with an acid-resistant substance, creating a design in the coating, and then exposing the plate to acid, which etches the plate where the metal is exposed. For designs incised directly into a copper plate using a burin or graver, use "engravings (prints)."
  • lovers - People who are in love or who have sexual intercourse.
  • rites of passage - Ritual ceremonies performed to facilitate or mark a person's change of status upon any of several important social and personal occasions, such as the onset of puberty.
  • shoes - Footwear with a relatively stiff sole and heel, and generally covering the foot at or below the ankle joint.
  • weddings - Ceremonies or rites joining a couple in matrimony, with its attendant festivities. For the state of marriage, use "marriage (social construct)."
