This bowl is a beautiful example of the qingbai (bluish-white) style of porcelain, with translucent glaze and elegant calligraphic decoration. Qingbai pottery commonly took the form of bowls, and the gently scalloped edges in this bowl mimic the petals of a flower.

This type of porcelain developed during the tenth century in the city of Jingdezhen. While Jindezhen was a center of ceramic production from the Tang period, the quality and beauty of qingbai pieces made Jingdezhen famous.
