The vessel has a funnel-shaped mouth, short neck, arching strap handle, a tapering conical body which tapers more strongly below the figure scene, and a short base with a sloping upper surface, vertical sides and a wide resting surface with a hollowed cone. Black gloss covers the mouth, lip, handle, lower body and top of the base of the lekythos. The figure scene is executed in black-figure on white ground, with a thin reserved band below the figure scene and two thin added red bands on the black area below the reserved band. There is also a thin added red band at the juncture of the body and the base and added red on the rim of the mouth. The shoulder, underside of the handle, vertical surface of the base and the underfoot are all reserved. The top of the shoulder is decorated with vertical stokes and neatly drawn buds. The figure scene shows a mounted Amazon (?) facing right framed by attacking hoplites. The hoplite on the right has a Boeotian shield with addded red. He kneels and holds a spear in his right hand. The crests of the Amazon and the hoplite on the right have added red. The hoplite on the left has a round shield with a pendant scabbord.", "Dedication" : "Gift of Doreen Canaday Spitzer, Class of 1936", "Copyright_Type" : "", "Disp_Obj_Type" : "", "Creation_Place2" : "Greece", "Department" : "Archaeology", "Obj_Name" : "", "Period" : "Late Archaic-Classical", "Style" : "", "Edition" : "", "Curator" : "", "Images": [ { "ImagePath" : "https://triarte.brynmawr.edu/Media/images/2011.17.19_BMC_s_2.jpg", "ThumbnailPath" : "https://triarte.brynmawr.edu/Media/Thumbnails/2011.17.19_BMC_s_2.jpg", "PreviewPath" : "https://triarte.brynmawr.edu/Media/Previews/2011.17.19_BMC_s_2.jpg", "IIIF_URL": "http://iiif.gallerysystems.com/2011.17.19_BMC_s_2.jpg", "IsPrimary" : "1", "_SurrogateID" : "72582", "Image_Type" : "", "Photo_Credit" : "", "Remarks" : "", "View" : "" } , ] },{ "embark_ID" : 179630, "URL" : "https://triarte.brynmawr.edu/Objects-1/info/179630", "Disp_Access_No" : "2011.17.29", "_AccNumSort1" : "", "Disp_Create_DT" : "5th century BCE", "_Disp_Start_Dat" : "500 BCE", "_Disp_End_Date" : "401 BCE", "Disp_Title" : "Daunian Two Handled Bowl", "Alt_Title" : "", "Obj_Title" : "", "Series_Title" : "", "Disp_Maker_1" : "", "Sort_Artist" : "", "Disp_Dimen" : "1 15/16 x 5 3/8 x 7 in. The vessel consists of a shallow bowl curving down to an articulated base, a slightly convex handle zone just below a flat everted rim, and slightly upturned strap handles which are attached below the rim. Slight tooling is visible on the exterior of the bowl where shallow grooves from dragged pebbles can be seen just below the handle. The decoration is executed in an unevenly fired reddish brown paint. Except for a paint spill, the exterior of the vessel is reserved. Uneven banding decorates the top of the rim and extends onto the top of the handles. On the interior of the bowl, there is a medium-width band at the height of the handle zone and a thin band framed by thinner bands below the handle zone and in the center of the vessel.
