Brown to buff, rather porous, core. Medium to coarse grit in medium concentration. Black particles much more prominent than in usual local clay, limestone nearly absent. Interior, exterior, greenish self-slip, apparently covering some of the wheel marks. Transitional? This fabric seems different and is perhaps not local. Dr. Alexandra Villing, Curator at the British Museum, looked at this object on April 4th 2011 and said: it is possibly a fragment of a mortarium, a vessel used for grinding spices and softer foods such as porridge or for dehusking small amounts of soaked grain. It would have been used for household, not industrial tasks. The Tarsus publication indicates that this vessel was locally produced but Villing suggests it might possibly be a Cypriot import. The original diameter of the vessel was approximately 49cm.", "Dedication" : "Tarsus Archives, gift of Hetty Goldman, Class of 1903", "Copyright_Type" : "", "Disp_Obj_Type" : "Prehistoric Anatolian", "Creation_Place2" : "Turkey", "Department" : "Archaeology", "Obj_Name" : "sherd", "Period" : "Early Iron Age", "Style" : "", "Edition" : "", "Curator" : "", "Images": [ { "ImagePath" : "https://triarte.brynmawr.edu/Media/images/2009.14.1048_BMC_f_2.jpg", "ThumbnailPath" : "https://triarte.brynmawr.edu/Media/Thumbnails/2009.14.1048_BMC_f_2.jpg", "PreviewPath" : "https://triarte.brynmawr.edu/Media/Previews/2009.14.1048_BMC_f_2.jpg", "IIIF_URL": "http://iiif.gallerysystems.com/2009.14.1048_BMC_f_2.jpg", "IsPrimary" : "1", "_SurrogateID" : "55065", "Image_Type" : "", "Photo_Credit" : "", "Remarks" : "", "View" : "" } , ] }, ] }
