It would have been used for household, not industrial tasks. It is a Cypriot import to Tarsus belonging to the 7th or possibly 6th century BCE. The image on plate 106 appears to match another object in the catalog and in Bryn Mawr's collection, accession no. 2009.14.1143 (Publication no.1597, T.38.255d). If it is the case that the photograph is mislabeled in the publication, and that T.38.612 is in fact this piece, this is the description Goldman provides: "Fragment of amphora with vertical neck curving suddenly into flaring lip. Rim rounded outside. Core structure unusual. Clay: very compact, well-levigated, quite hard-fired, completely black. Only the edges nearest surface have turned brown. Interior: wet-smoothed; unlike Tarsian native wares, smooth to touch. Exterior: dark brown to gray slip, sparse horizontal burnish. Dull black glaze on exterior rim only; band below exterior rim. ... Material contains many seventh and sixth century fragments. ... Treatment of interior and exterior suggests native techniques but glaze seems Greek. Perhaps another 'hybrid' (?). ..."", "Dedication" : "Tarsus Archives, gift of Hetty Goldman, Class of 1903", "Copyright_Type" : "", "Disp_Obj_Type" : "Prehistoric Anatolian", "Creation_Place2" : "Turkey", "Department" : "Archaeology", "Obj_Name" : "sherd", "Period" : "Late Iron Age", "Style" : "", "Edition" : "", "Curator" : "", "Images": [ { "ImagePath" : "https://triarte.brynmawr.edu/Media/images/2009.14.1142_BMC_f_2.jpg", "ThumbnailPath" : "https://triarte.brynmawr.edu/Media/Thumbnails/2009.14.1142_BMC_f_2.jpg", "PreviewPath" : "https://triarte.brynmawr.edu/Media/Previews/2009.14.1142_BMC_f_2.jpg", "IIIF_URL": "http://iiif.gallerysystems.com/2009.14.1142_BMC_f_2.jpg", "IsPrimary" : "1", "_SurrogateID" : "56032", "Image_Type" : "", "Photo_Credit" : "", "Remarks" : "", "View" : "" } , ] },{ "embark_ID" : 177414, "URL" : "https://triarte.brynmawr.edu/Objects-1/info/177414", "Disp_Access_No" : "2009.14.1151", "_AccNumSort1" : "", "Disp_Create_DT" : "2000 BCE - 1200 BCE", "_Disp_Start_Dat" : "2000 BCE", "_Disp_End_Date" : "1200 BCE", "Disp_Title" : "Late Iron Age Assyrian "Two-Tone" Ware Rim Sherd", "Alt_Title" : "", "Obj_Title" : "", "Series_Title" : "", "Disp_Maker_1" : "", "Sort_Artist" : "", "Disp_Dimen" : "1 5/16 x 3 1/8 x 5/16 in.
