Two warp selvages with thick cotton heading cords. No weft selvages. Interlocked joins. Overall 4-headed birds design. Average weave counts 32 wefts/cm and 9 warps/cm. Tan cotton warp .25mm in diameter and S(2Z) spin/ply. Red, orange, gold, green-blue Camelid wool weft .25mm in diameter and S(2Z) spin/ply. [Bird Iconography] Chancay fragment likely from a belt or sash. Per student research 12/2019. STudent paper attached. From that paper: The central figure is a combination of four bird heads and geometric figures. This figure, when viewed sideways, reveals itself to also be a frog, a motif that is extremely popular in Chancay textiles (Asil, 2015; Lehman 2005). In addition to this, you can also see another snake figure resting in the space between the four-headed bird/frog figure and the main snake/buffer figure (Hopkins-Barriga, personal communication, 2019). The use of complex imagery, symbolism, design, and the use of combined geometric-animal figures are all trademark traits of Chancay textiles.", "Dedication" : "Gift of Ward M.
