Missing are a large flat chip from the crown of the head, a smaller chip from the right forehead, another large chip from the right side of the back of the head, and a deeper large chip from the left side of the neck. The nose is almost entirely gone. At the level of the base of the neck is a large irregular break which makes it impossible to determine the original extent of this piece of sculpture, but it was probably only a bust. In brief, the head is that of an old, bearded man wearing a round fillet around his head. He looks slightly to the right and downwards. This pose makes the identification of the head as a portrait herm somewhat problematic, although the miniature size of the head would appear to deny the alternative identification as a simple portrait. Both the sides and the back of the stone are smoothly polished. The border around the inscription consists of two bands divided by a rather wide incised line. The outer band is plain. ON the left-hand side of the stone, 6.25 cm. from the corner, a hole 0.5 cm. in diameter is bored through this band. At the bottom of the stone, 9.3 cm. from the corner, another hole of equivalent size was bored through the band, although it is not incompletely preserved due to a chip in the bottom of the stone. The inner band is a shallow concave groove in the stone 1.1-1.2 cm. wide. At the corner, an incised line runs diagonally across this band. Traces of the guide lines for the letters are visible. In line 1, the D and C are partially missing but are sure. The same is true of the V and second M in line 2, after which is preserved the very bottom of a vertical stroke. a small part of the D in line 3 is missing, and the following letter is represented only by a vertical and a horizontal meeting to form a lower left-hand corner. the letter can only be an E. Only about a third of the D in line 4 is preserved, but enough to be certain that it is in fact, a D. After the X in line 5, only part of the triangular finial is preserved. However, it is almost certain that this belongs to a diagonal, rather than a vertical, stroke, and hence an A rather than a P is restored. This makes Wilmann's and Le Blant's reading of EXAGITENT likely. In line 6, the bottom half of the final I is preserved. If EXAGITENT is the last word in line 5, then the total width of the writing field should be ca. 26 cm. This calculation is based on the space taken by the initial seven letters in line 3-5, a number of letters equal to the number missing from EXAGITENT. If SICVTI appears alone as the last line of the inscription, and if it is to be placed symmetrically in the middle of the writing field, then the projected total width of the writing field is 25.9 cm. The above calculations indicate that: (A) if we restore EXAGITENT, then SICVTI must be the lone word of line 6, or (B) if SICVTI appears alone and symmetrically in line 6, the restoration of EXAGIENT fits the stone very well. Le Blant's reading is therefore adopted here. /The preserved width of line 4 is 15.0 cm., leaving 10.9 cm. of writing space free now that we have accepted Le Blant's restoration. This leaves space for either seven or eight letters. Since the first of these is certainly an O, a relatively wide letter, we may fairly safely conclude that there are seven letter missing from line 4. The width of line 3 up to the D is 10.7 cm., leaving 15.2 cm. of writing space. The succeeding E would prolong the line width to 12.0 cm, leaving 13.9 cm. free. In lines 4-5, 13.9 cm. is equivalent to the width of the first nine letters, so that we may tentatively leave space for nine letters after the E of line 3. Ht. of line1: 1.7. Ht. of line 2: 1.7 cm.
