In the center is a profile view of a woman's head, with a bun with some loose tendrils and an earring shown in added white. An olive branch in reserve is encircles the rim, and the interior row of leaves surround the edge of the depression. Black glaze covers the reverse, except for the foot, which is unglazed at the base and has rings of black glaze on the underside. Previous catalog entry: Stemless Plate, Athenian Red-figure (Proto-fish plate). A stemless plate decorated in red-figure technique. In the depressed central cavity is the head of a woman in profile. Her hair is drawn up in the back in the form of a bun. Earring is formed by a dot of white paint. Surrounding the central cavity is a ring of 16 leaves, whose stems slant diagonally towards the center. Shapes and contours not uniform. The rachis is formed by a slash of black glaze. On the rim, divided from the inner ring of 16 leaves by a reserved band, is another ring of leaves, 15 in number, which slant opposite their inside counterparts. On underside, glaze is worn off on rim. Wheel-made ridges are evident. Entire underside glazed except for a reserved band at intersection of foot to body. Underside of foot is decorated with a series of glazed rings. Beazley lists this piece as a proto-fish plate. The shape is identical to the so-called fish plate with deep, overhanging rim, a central depression, and ring foot (Agora XII, 147-148 nos. 1061-1076, pl. 37 and fig. 10). These fish plates date no earlier than 400 B.C. and are quite common in the Hellenistic period. However, the decoration of the fish plate is usually plain black or with marine creatures on the interior. The Neils plate, with head in center depression, is decorated similar to a type of broad-rim plate produced in Athens from 450-400 B.C. and for the most part exported to Spina and surrounding areas (cf. S. Aurigemma, Scavi di Spina II, pls. 10, 47, 141, 150). Beazley and Sparkes and Talcott both see this piece as a transition from Athenian high stemmed, broad-rimmed plate to the fish plate.", "Dedication" : "Gift of Patricia Neils Boulter, Class of 1948, PhD 1953, in memory of Freida M.
