The bottle is formed from a very fine, light, buff clay, and covered in glaze ranging in color from black to reddish brown on one side, with added yellow and white. Around the narrow neck is a band of vertical, parallel lines in added white, framed by two sets of horizontal lines. Below this, on the shoulder, is a frieze with the silhouette of a woman's head, facing left, in worn added white, flanked by florals or sprays in yellow. The body is ribbed down to the top of the foot. From the catalog card- The shape is characterized by a low double-tiered foot with a concave band in the middle, an ovoid body tapering above to an extremely narrow neck, and a distinctive top around the mouth. The entire vessel is covered with glaze ranging in color from black to reddish brown on one side, now rather dull, except for a reserved band 9mm high immediately above the foot; the underside of the base is also unglazed. The entire belly above this reserved band and below the painted decoration of the shoulder and neck is decorated with vertical ribbing. On the neck one finds the characteristic overpaint decoration of Gnathian ware. Where the neck tapers to its minimum diameter are placed two horizontal lines in white paint framing a series of vertical bars also in white paint; this motif is bordered above and below by horizontal white lines. Immediately below this line ornament is a small frieze band containing the head of a woman, facing left, now badly worn but in added white. She is flanked on either side by floating florals with red dots and by extended flowing floral sprays executed in yellow (also well worn) which meet on the reverse side of the vessel. An almost exact parallel to this piece is a Gnathian bottle in London, Wellcome Museum 51182 (T.B.L. Webster, BICS 15 (1968) 30, no. 17, plate IIIb). Webster places the Wellcome bottle in his Ribbed Group G, the Group of the Manchester Pelike; he has dated his Ribbed or Late Group of Gnathian ware to 325-270 BCE (Webster, op.cit. 4) for dating, 30 for the Group of the Manchester Pelike. Card contains a profile/cross section drawing. The vessel has been dipped, with traces of thin glaze on the resting surface of the foot. For dipping see Toby Schreiber, "Dipping as a Glazing Technique in Antiquity," in Greek Vases in the J. Paul Getty Museum, Vol. 3, 1986, p. 143-148. The decoration of the vessel includes a female head, facing left, flanked on either side by floating florals with red dots and by extended flowing floral sprays that meet on the reverse side of the vessel. The shape has been called an alabastron (see John W. Hayes, Greek and Italian Black Gloss Ware and Related Wares in the Royal Ontario Museum, A Catalogue, Toronto 1984, p.152, no. 252). Hayes describes the mouth of the vessel as having "a heavy overhanging rim comprising a small lip-moulding and a flaring flange below." The shape is also called a Bombylos by Mario Bernardini, "Vasi dello Stile di Gnathia, Vasi a Vernice Nera", BARI, p. 22, with ribbed examples on plate 47. The shape seems to be a perfume vessel whose roots go back to the Archaic period in a form made in Aeolic Bucchero. The vessel has a broad funnel-shaped lip with a raised upper edge and a deep hanging flange. There are two grooves, one at the edge of the mouth, the other on the upper surface of the mouth, which preserve traces of added white. Added white is probably also preserved in the grove boarding the top of the ribbing. Half of the raised rim and one quarter of the pendant flange are missing. On the unchipped reserved surface there is miltos.
