This is the first marble version of Endymion by Rinehart which was likely finished by his friend and fellow sculptor George Simonds. The marble was purchased in 1874 by Baltimore railroad tycoon John Garrett. Endymion was purchased by John Garrett, the president of the Baltimore and Ohio (B&O) Railroad, and the father of Mary Elizabeth Garrett, who brought it to Bryn Mawr in 1904. The sculpture was displayed at Garrett's and M. Carey Thomas's house, the Deanery, and later spent decades in storage because of damage, but has been conserved and redisplayed here in 2014 thanks to an anonymous donor. Rinehart, a Baltimore sculptor, lived for many years in Rome; his sculptures were often classical in style and include subjects derived from mythology, like this one. Endymion was the beloved of Selene, the moon goddess, who asked Zeus to grant Endymion eternal youth; Zeus granted him eternal sleep. Rinehart made more than one version of the sculpture, and a bronze replica was cast for his grave in Greenmount Cemetery in Baltimore. The bust of Juno Ludovisi nearby was made in Rinehart's Rome studio. ", "Dedication" : "Bequest of M.
