Hole in pottery where it was repaired in antiquity. Probably some sort of staple. Dr. Alexandra Villing, Curator at the British Museum, looked at this object on April 4th 2011 and said: it is a fragment of a mortarium, a vessel used for grinding spices and softer foods such as porridge or for dehusking small amounts of soaked grain. It would have been used for household, not industrial tasks. The vessel to which this fragment belongs was a Cypriot import to Tarsus and had an original diameter of approximately 32cm. There is an ancient repair hole in the fragment. Artifact number (T.38.535) corresponds to no.923 in Goldman Publication. Goldman: "Fragment with slightly rounded vertical rim set off from wall on outside. Clas as 921. Yellowish white slip, somewhat gritty; thinner on inside. ... Imported.
