Because the paper is wove, this is probably a restrike dating to the 1750s or later, since it was during this decade that wove paper was introduced. It is signed “JG van vliet inv.” Van Vliet was hired by Rembrandt to make etchings based on Rembrandt’s paintings and some of his sketches. He also completed prints which Rembrandt left unfinished. However, Van Vliet is also known as an artist in his own right, especially for the print series of beggars and street people of which this print was a part. Even in his independent work, Van Vliet’s style reflects that of Rembrandt. In this image a hunchbacked beggar walks with a stick towards the right. It is part of the series of ten prints called “Beggars and other Low Life,” of which Bryn Mawr has seven prints (probably restrikes). Beggars and other street people were a common subject for Rembrandt as well. Van Vliet does not portray beggars in a positive light in this series. The concern with dishonest beggars with false handicaps was a common one during the seventeenth century. It is possible that the figure shown here may have a false hunchback, made by using some sort of stuffing to fake the disability.
