The nozzle emerges from under the big toe of the foot. There is a shallow cavity on the top of the ankle but the foot is solid. There is a descriptive label attached to the bottom of the lamp. Label says MODEL OF A POMPEIAN LAMP. The design was evidently suggested by the custom of Orientals and mountaineers of securing a taper to the foot to lighten against dangers of bites of adders or from falls from precipitous paths. See Psalm OXIX., 105.
