First proof, signed by Cruikshank. One of several proofs known. Printed by R. Holdgate, June 20th, 1864. Published by Wm. Tweedie. Worship of Bacchus, or The Drinking Customs of Society in pencil, "from John Taylor to J. W. Garrett Esq." Cruikshank adapted the print from his large oil painting by the same title. The figures were outlined by Cruikshank and finished by Charles Mottram. Cruikshank started as a caricaturist but moved into the engraving of book illustrations in 863 books by the end of his lifetime. Grimm Brothers and Dickens were amonÿ them. He became a propagandist for temperance reform, and produced two engraved series, The Bottle (1847) and The Drunkard's Children (1848) before makinÿ this print. John Work Garrett, Mary Garrett's father, was president of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in the 1860's and was involved in Civil War transport for President Lincoln. The family business earlier that century had been in banking, with relationships in Baltimore to the George Peabody and Company in London (in the commodities market for ÿrain and tobacco). John Taylor is an unknown Taylor with no known connection to Joseph Taylor, founder of Bryn Mawr College. This print presumably ÿame to the College through Mary Garrett. It was found in a College attic. In a badly foxed condition, it was sent to the Fogg Conservation Laboratory in 1983 through the donation of Ruth Levy Merriam '31. It is exhibited in its renewed condition, as an important College heritage item, for the first time.", "Dedication" : "Bequest of M.
