The piece has probably been burnt. The decoration includes a woman facing right, playing auloi somewhat awkwardly. The mouth piece of the instrument is oddly drawn. The woman has loose, long hair falling onto her shoulders. She wears a sleeved chiton with a painted mantle draped over the right shoulder and arm. The figure has an almond eye open more at the back than the front. There is thick added paint, now greyish brown in color, but probably once some other color, having been distorted by burning. The pigment is thickest on the garment covering the body, thinner elsewhere. There are also traces of a second added color which may have been part of a head covering that extends out into the space beyond the hairline. Above her head is a trace of the lower edge of the upper border. Bag labeled: Sherd with Greek Lekythos/ H. Goldman's/ repainted but genuine. Enclosed Note: 11/30/80 Dear Machteld, I think that the sherd does come from an early __ lekythos, but that it has been repainted, transfering a torch-bearer into a flute-player. . . Tom Gaizer has had it analyzed and showed results... G.
