Owl on leafy branch with cricket nearby; background: bird, 2 butterflies, 2 bees. From a written 2016 document (attached to this record): The Xiang technique was one of four traditional Chinese techniques for embroidering silk. The Xiang style is most notable for its similarity to painting, in that it used neutral colors to create a scheme for darker shades of thread to build and create space, depth, and dimension on the fabric just as oil would be spread on a canvas. Interestingly, the stitching techniques were also similar to painting because the weavers adjusted the length of unattached thread to enhance the realism of the subject. Particularly, the owl’s wings look as though they are real feathers sown on because of how long the segments of loose thread are to imitate those fibers of an owl’s barb. While this textile used crewel handwork, it appears as if it might be an example of Xiang embroidery, or Hunan style, because of the owl’s shading and the stitching’s effect of creating more dimension from the shadows and neutral colors. Many of these Xiang crewel styled textiles and brocades were discovered in 1972 in the Mawangdui tomb in Hunan (Xiang) dating back to the Western Han Dynasty (206 B.C.-A.D. 8), revealing that this intricate style of embroidery dated back long before this piece’s creation and purchase. Most interestingly, the figures depicted in this textile; (2) butterflies, (2) bees, (1) owl, (1) cricket, (1) bird, suggest that there are iconographic motifs of mythology and spiritual symbolism depicted in this striking textile. Although the life of this piece is unknown prior to 1975, the frame, glossy matte, and faded color suggests that it was on display.
