The style and material indicate that it came from Palmyra, a Syrian oasis city that was an important caravan stop that flourished in the first three centuries CE. The sculpture incorporates a blend of western and eastern styles: her more classical, modeled chin and lips contrast with the more linear and stylized treatment of her eyes and hair. She wears a turban and veil, and pendant earrings common in this period. Somewhat less than half life size. Woman wears veil and turban, no bandeau; hair centrally parted and swept back over temples, three wisps on forehead, two strands in front of ears; wears necklace, earrings. From the Palymara Portrait Project: She wears two headdresses: a turban and a veil. The turban is coiled. It is rendered in two twisted layers. A curving groove indicates the coiling of the fabric. The veil is heavy and has a scalloped edge. It falls downwards on each side of the head. Her hair is centrally parted and brushed away on each side of the forehead. At the center of the forehead, a small, crescent shaped curl extends downwards. Part of the hair is covered by the headdress. Several strands of hair on each side of the head and above the earlobes are pushed back over the edge of the turban and disappear under the veil. A narrow, curving lock of hair is shown on each cheek. Her face is oval. The eyebrows are curving, rendered by thin ridges. The eyes are almond-shaped with thick upper eyelids. The end of the upper eyelids extends beyond that of the lower ones. Only the earlobes are visible and she is wearing dumbbell-shaped earrings (Colledge classification: H). The mouth is small and slightly open and the lips are full. The cheeks are fleshy and the chin is round. The neck is wide with two curving grooves. At the base of the neck, she wears a necklace composed of small, round beads.
