Vining received the Noh doll as a souvenir from Princess Shigeko, Emperor Akihito's eldest sister. The Noh doll is made of textile, ceramic, wood and paint, placed on a detachable tatami with three individual pieces of accessories. The whole set, categorized by the Bryn Mawr Special Collections as recreational artifact, is contained within a hinoki wooden box, which reads 红梅印 - 能人形一体 (red plum seal - full Noh doll). Its time of production is yet unknown. Noh, characterized by its ceremonial tempo, is a form of Classical Japanese musical drama that has been performed since the 14th century. Prior to the fall of the Tokugawa shogunate in 1868, Noh remained as an aristocratic art form largely financed by the government, dedicated to preserving tradition and historic authenticity rather than to experimenting with new forms of entertainment. In the realm of Noh, costumes are known as shozoku (robes). The Noh doll from the Gray Vining Collection is wearing a choken (outer robe) – an unlined, long-sleeved garment worn by female dancing characters. The strings hanging down from the sleeves are called choken-no-sodetsuyu, while the ones holding the choken together in front of the chest are named choken-no-muna-himo. Choken as such are often seen on characters of celestial beings that shall perform a special dance. Indeed, this very Noh doll is the main character, tennin (an aerial spirit or celestial dancer) from the famed Noh play Hagoromo. Hagoromo doll is a type of the most popular dolls amongst all Noh dolls. According to the plot, a fisherman discovers the hagoromo, the magical feather-mantle of a tennin while strolling along the seashore, and hides it away. For the tennin cannot return to Heaven without the mantle, she demands it back. The fisherman argues with her, and promises to return it if she will dance for him. In line with the narrative, we see on the Noh doll s shozoku those painted golden feathers. This is a realistic imitation of the original costume in the sense that the feather pattern, instead of being embroidered, retains its comparative flatness as it should be. Notice how vividly red the choken of the Noh doll is. In Noh, women s shozoku are divided into two categories: iro-iri (with red) and iro-nashi (without red). A young woman is clothed in a shozoku having much red, whereas a middle-aged woman is dressed in a shozoku without any red. Aside from the red choken, the Noh doll is wearing a removable purple and red katsura-obi (headband), binding her long, black hair, as well as a bird-shaped, bejeweled tenkan (heavenly crown), signifying her supernatural identity. Along presented with the doll are the iconic omote (Noh mask), the intricately illustrated katsura-ohgi (folding fan), and an amiable-looking pet dog. The use of props in Noh theatre is minimalistic and stylized. Throughout the dance sequences, the folding fan is used to represent any hand-held props, such as a sword or a flute. With her right arm upraised, the Noh doll seems to be in the middle of performing the slow, heavenly dance. Her katsura-ohgi is brightly colored, depicting a crowd under the sakura tree on one side, decorated with calligraphy on the other. Painted on each side of the koshimaki (under kimono) are the anti-clockwise trinity kamon prints, possibly signifying an ancient Japanese clan. It is common for shozoku to bear various kamon prints. For these robes, especially that of the shite (main protagonist), are modeled after the extravagant robes given to Noh actors by noblemen and samurai in the Muromachi period.
