Unsigned. The first catalogue reference to this bust is Lloyd Goodrich, Thomas Eakins: His Life and Work. New York: Whitney Museum of American Art, 1933. no.498 The Thomas Eakins Collection in the PMA (1978) lists five extant original wax studies/models for the painting. One of these is the PMA Head of William Rush (1929-184-37), p.67, no.26 E. I note that 2 of the dimensions of this wax are larger than this plaster. Appendix A lists a shellacked plaster (1932-19-1a) p.167 E, with larger dimensions than this plaster. William Homer and Daniel W. Dietrich, Eakins at Avondale and Thomas Eakins: A Personal Collection( Chadds Ford, PA: Brandywine River Museum, 1980) notes that TE made five wax studies c.1876 after sculptures by Rush. Several casts were made from the wax originals by Susan Eakins and Samuel Murray in 1931. The studies were not meant to be exhibited, but rather served as models for figures in the painting. Thomas Eakins Rediscovered: Charles Bregler's Thomas Eakins Collection at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (1997), cat.254, plaster cast in 1931 from wax original in the PMA. dimensions 7 1/8 x 4 1/4 x 5 inches (slightly larger than the PMA). Provenance-Susan Eakins to Charles Bregler, c.1932. cf. CB to Samuel Murray c. 1939; CB Estate Inventory 1958,5. A catalogue sheet/essay from Hirschl & Adler Gallery, NY (undated, prob. 1990s) restates that several sets of plasters were cast in 1931 by SE and SM from wax and wood originals now in the PMA. They list the Newark Museum as owning all 5 subjects in plaster. The PMA’s Thomas Eakins catalogue (2001) does not illustrate or mention the plasters. There is a bronze cast at Yale 1971.88.2. Need further details about their cast. There is a bronze cast at Bryn Mawr College, bequeathed by Seymour Adelman. Their date is c.1877.
