The style and material indicate that it came from Palmyra, a Syrian oasis city that was an important caravan stop that flourished in the first three centuries CE. The sculpture incorporates a blend of western and eastern styles: her more classical, modeled chin and lips contrast with the more linear and stylized treatment of her eyes and hair. She wears a turban and veil, and pendant earrings common in this period. Somewhat less than half life size. Woman wears veil and turban, no bandeau; hair centrally parted and swept back over temples, three wisps on forehead, two strands in front of ears; wears necklace, earrings. From the Palymara Portrait Project: She wears two headdresses: a turban and a veil. The turban is coiled. It is rendered in two twisted layers. A curving groove indicates the coiling of the fabric. The veil is heavy and has a scalloped edge. It falls downwards on each side of the head. Her hair is centrally parted and brushed away on each side of the forehead. At the center of the forehead, a small, crescent shaped curl extends downwards. Part of the hair is covered by the headdress. Several strands of hair on each side of the head and above the earlobes are pushed back over the edge of the turban and disappear under the veil. A narrow, curving lock of hair is shown on each cheek. Her face is oval. The eyebrows are curving, rendered by thin ridges. The eyes are almond-shaped with thick upper eyelids. The end of the upper eyelids extends beyond that of the lower ones. Only the earlobes are visible and she is wearing dumbbell-shaped earrings (Colledge classification: H). The mouth is small and slightly open and the lips are full. The cheeks are fleshy and the chin is round. The neck is wide with two curving grooves. At the base of the neck, she wears a necklace composed of small, round beads. The right fist holds a curved implement, reminiscent of a scythe or scimitar. This implement is flat and serpentine, and extends up beyond the top of the head. Its length is roughly equal to 2⁄3 the height of the figure. The arms bend once, conflating the wrists and elbows. The head is ovoid and flat with a pointed chin, somewhat mask-like. The nose is prominent and continues up over the head into a ring, around which are wrapped separate ribbons of metal representing hair. The mouth is a straight, shallow, incised line. The eyes are made of metal rings attached to the surface after casting. The upper body is tilted to the right. It is unclear if this is entirely a result of the break at the waist of the figure or if it retains an original stance from casting. The torso is triangular and flat, with small bumps representing nipples. The body narrows at the waist, with a small bump representing the genitals. The legs are long and form a peak along the front edge. The knees are represented by bumps 1⁄3 of the way down the length of the legs. Calves are accentuated, as are the bones of the ankles. The feet are flat and nearly perpendicular to the body, with three toes. The feet rest on a platform that becomes a roughly cylindrical pedestal, which is pierced from the bottom for display. Sales receipt (written by John J. Klejman, New York City): "A highly stylized figure of a king solid cast in the lost wax process in bronze. The figure is in a standing position with bodily proportions exaggerated in size, length and form. Triangular face with big, circular eyes, large, aquiline nose, and large chin. An unusual feature of this figure is the ribbon-like hairs which are stuck into a loop extending from the bridge of the nose to the occiput in a curve. In the closed right hand is a scepter and in the left hand was once probably a staff. Original, heavy, encrusted patina. A protrusion under the feet was left after casting to be used as a support for the figure. Second to third millenium B.C. Hittite. Excavated near Ras-Shamra".", "Dedication" : "Gift of Richard C.
