These objects are placed in graves and are a way to commemorate the deceased. There are two serpentine lines running along the back of this object. Like the rest of this collection, this object's original shape and artistic technical style comes from the Kakongo pottery. Engraved patterning like cross-hatching, protruding circular motifs, and zig-zagging lines are all evocative of pottery from the Kakongo region. The serpentine lines are symbolic of snakes. In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the serpent is a symbol of creation. According to Congolese spiritual beliefs, the a rainbow arose two serpents which give birth to man. Because of the intrinsic link between life and serpents, these motifs are placed on funerary objects. Water is also considered a source of life in Congolese spiritual beliefs, so it is not uncommon to find these serpentine motifs on water pitchers. It is unclear if this particular object is used in funerary practices, but due to the presence of traditional motifs and comparanda research object, looking into the secondary use of this object would be benefical. --Sofia Isabel Mondragon April 22, 2022 Source: Nzungu: La Ceramique Bakongo", "Dedication" : "Gift of Janet MacGaffey, PhD 1981, and Wyatt MacGaffey, Professor Emeritus of Anthropology,
